CES 2026 for Small Business: What Actually Shipped—and What's Worth Buying
Updated August 2026: a fact-checked look at AI NAS, repairable business laptops, and Wi-Fi 7, including current specs, costs, limitations, and buying advice.

Seven months after CES, repairability is the most broadly useful trend for small businesses, Wi-Fi 7 is sensible for new deployments, and AI NAS remains promising but specialized. Most small businesses should not replace working equipment solely to gain AI TOPS or Wi-Fi 7.

What Changed Since CES
CES 2026 highlighted three product categories relevant to small businesses: AI-capable NAS servers, repairable laptops, and Wi-Fi 7 networking. Seven months later, here is where things stand:
- AI NAS: The UGREEN NASync iDX6011 series shipped its first Kickstarter units in May. Retail availability is expected later in 2026. The software (UGOS and Uliya AI) is functional but still maturing.
- Repairable laptops: The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 and HP EliteBook X G2 variants are shipping and available for purchase.
- Wi-Fi 7: Access points like the UniFi U7 Pro Wall have been shipping since late 2024. Software updates have enabled MLO (Multi-Link Operation). Client device support is growing but not yet universal.

The UGREEN NASync iDX6011 combines NAS storage with Intel Core Ultra processors that include a dedicated NPU (Neural Processing Unit). The result is a server that can run local AI workloads—file search, document summarization, photo recognition—without sending data to external services by default.

UGREEN NASync iDX Series - AI-Native NAS Announcement
What the AI features do:
- Universal Search: natural-language file search across documents, photos, and app data ("Find last quarter's sales reports")
- Uliya AI Chat: a local chatbot that answers questions using your stored files
- AI Album: face and object recognition for photo libraries
- Voice Memos: voice transcription
- File Organization: automated file categorization and tagging
Important qualifications:
Uliya defaults to a local model—your prompts and file context stay on the device during local inference. However, UGREEN also offers optional cloud-based AI models. When a user enables these, prompts and context are sent to third-party services. UGREEN's privacy policy states that local inference is the default and cloud services require explicit authorization. If data privacy is your primary reason for choosing this product, review the Uliya privacy policy and disable cloud model access if your use case requires strict local-only processing.
Limitations and Hidden Costs
- Drives sold separately. Budget $400–$1,200 for NAS drives depending on capacity and redundancy level.
- RAID is not a backup. You still need off-site backup, a UPS, encryption, and recovery testing.
- 10GbE requires matching infrastructure. You need 10GbE switches ($200–$600+), NICs in workstations, and Cat6a or better cabling.
- UGOS is a new platform. It lacks the decade of ecosystem maturity, third-party package library, and community documentation that Synology DSM or QNAP QTS offer.
- NPU TOPS ≠ AI capability. The 11–13 NPU TOPS handle specific on-device inference tasks. The "33 TOPS" and "96 TOPS" figures are platform totals combining NPU, GPU, and CPU—not NPU performance alone.
- Uliya's supported file formats and languages are still expanding. Verify compatibility with your specific document types before purchasing.
The Power User Alternative: Minisforum MS-02 Ultra

25GbE provides 2.5 times the nominal bandwidth of 10GbE. For teams regularly transferring large media files—4K video, CAD models, medical imaging—this is a meaningful throughput increase.
This Is a Workstation, Not a Turnkey NAS
The MS-02 Ultra is sold as a barebone system. A usable deployment requires memory ($200–$1,500 depending on capacity), storage ($200–$2,000+), and an operating system. You will also need to configure your own data protection—RAID, backups, snapshots, encryption—without the guided setup that products like Synology DSM or UGOS provide. This is a strong option for IT teams comfortable with server administration, not a plug-and-play NAS replacement.

Synology's current models—the DS925+ (released May 2025) and DS1525+—support local face and object recognition through Synology Photos, run Docker containers, handle virtualization workloads, and offer a mature backup ecosystem. They do not include a general-purpose NPU or local AI chat, but they remain capable file servers with proven data protection. The DS925+ has dual 2.5GbE ports but no 10GbE upgrade path; the DS1525+ adds an optional 10GbE module (E10G22-T1-Mini, sold separately).

Who Should Wait
If your current NAS handles your file-sharing, backup, and collaboration needs, there is no urgency to replace it with an AI NAS. The AI features—while genuinely useful for specific workflows—are still maturing. Consider the iDX6011 when:
- You have a large library of unstructured files (photos, scanned documents, contracts) that would benefit from AI-powered search and classification
- You already have or plan to deploy 10GbE infrastructure
- You are comfortable with a newer software platform that may have fewer third-party integrations initially
Repairable Business Laptops: A Practical Improvement
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 Aura Edition
The ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 is powered by Intel Core Ultra (Series 3) "Panther Lake"—Intel's first client platform built on its 18A process node.
The more notable development is the Space Frame chassis, which Lenovo says received a preliminary 9/10 iFixit repairability score. Lenovo reports that these components can be replaced:
- Battery
- SSD (Gen 5 support)
- USB ports
- Keyboard
- Speakers
- Fans
The Space Frame places components on both sides of the motherboard, which Lenovo says improves thermal management while making major parts accessible.

Limitations to Consider
- RAM is soldered. Despite the high repairability score, you cannot upgrade memory after purchase. Choose your configuration carefully.
- "User-replaceable" needs context. Lenovo describes several repairs in the context of faster technician-performed servicing, not necessarily end-user DIY. Verify which repairs your organization can perform versus which require trained service.
- Arc B390 graphics is specific to Core Ultra X7 configurations (358H/368H). Standard Core Ultra 5 and 7 models use Intel integrated graphics.
- Repairability supports longevity but does not guarantee it. A 9/10 score means parts are accessible—it does not by itself determine how long the laptop will last. That depends on build quality, software support, and parts availability over time.
- Parts availability is the real test. Repairability matters only if replacement parts remain available and reasonably priced for several years.
HP EliteBook X G2: Multi-Architecture Choice
HP's EliteBook X G2 shares a common chassis design across three processor architectures:

HP's approach reduces physical fleet variation—one chassis design, one set of accessories, consistent form factor. However, ARM (Snapdragon) and x86 (Intel/AMD) configurations still require separate application compatibility testing, driver management, OS imaging, VPN client validation, and peripheral verification. This is not a single laptop program in the IT management sense—it is a single industrial design with three distinct platform-support requirements.

The Windows 10 Factor
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft offers an Extended Security Updates (ESU) program that provides security patches—recently extended through October 12, 2027, for eligible consumer devices. For businesses still running Windows 10 hardware, a laptop refresh to Windows 11 on current hardware addresses this directly. However, a fleet refresh motivated solely by Windows 10 end-of-life does not require the most expensive hardware available. Evaluate whether your workloads actually benefit from a 50+ TOPS NPU, or whether a mid-range Copilot+ PC meets your needs at a lower price point.
NPU TOPS in Context
Microsoft's 40 TOPS threshold is a Copilot+ eligibility requirement, not a universal measure of AI capability. Whether an NPU delivers practical value depends on:
- Which applications support NPU offloading (currently limited—real-time translation, meeting transcription, select productivity features)
- Model compatibility and memory requirements
- Software licensing (some AI features require Microsoft 365 subscriptions)
- Your team's actual workflows
For most small businesses in August 2026, the NPU enables a few useful conveniences. It is not yet transformative for typical office workloads.

Who Should Wait
If your current laptops are running Windows 11, performing adequately, and are not approaching end of warranty, there is no urgency to upgrade for NPU TOPS alone. Repairability is most valuable when it coincides with a planned refresh—not as a reason to replace working equipment early.
Wi-Fi 7: Sensible for New Deployments

The UniFi U7 Pro Wall, released in late 2024, is a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 access point designed for wall-mounted installation. Software updates have since enabled MLO support.

On client capacity: The vendor-rated 300+ client figure represents association capacity—how many devices can connect—not how many can operate simultaneously at full throughput without degradation. Ubiquiti's own Wi-Fi 6 access points carry similar or higher client ratings in their technical documentation. High client counts on spec sheets reflect controlled test conditions, not guaranteed congestion-free performance in a real office with mixed traffic. Actual capacity depends on traffic patterns, channel utilization, interference, and client behavior. Do not use vendor maximum-client figures as a capacity plan.
On wall mounting: In-wall placement works well for certain office layouts—placing APs at desk height in multi-room environments. But ceiling mounting is not inherently inferior. Coverage depends on antenna pattern, obstructions, AP placement strategy, channel plan, and client distribution. Choose placement based on your floor plan, not on a general rule.
From our deployments: We have deployed UniFi U7 Pro Wall access points in several South Florida offices. The wall-mounted form factor works well in multi-room suites where ceiling access is limited, and the 2.5GbE uplink handles typical office traffic without issues. That said, we always pair these with a proper channel plan and site survey—the AP hardware is only part of the equation.
MLO: What It Actually Does
Multi-Link Operation (MLO) allows a Wi-Fi 7 client to use multiple frequency bands simultaneously or switch between them. Different MLO implementations may:
- Switch between bands when one becomes congested
- Listen across multiple links for lower latency
- Transmit across bands simultaneously for higher aggregate throughput (in supported modes)
The practical business benefits are improved reliability for latency-sensitive applications (video calls, VoIP) and more consistent connections in environments with competing traffic.
MLO Requirements and Compatibility
- MLO requires Wi-Fi 7 client devices. Older laptops and phones will not benefit.
- Enabling MLO on UniFi networks currently enforces WPA3 security, which can cause compatibility issues with older IoT devices, printers, and legacy clients that only support WPA2.
- Plan your migration carefully if you have devices that cannot support WPA3.
Wi-Fi Sensing (802.11bf)
IEEE 802.11bf, published September 26, 2025, standardizes Wi-Fi sensing—detecting motion by analyzing signal disruptions. Current implementations include Xfinity WiFi Motion, Plume, Origin Wireless, and Linksys.
Important context:
- 802.11bf is a separate WLAN-sensing amendment, not an inherent feature of every Wi-Fi 7 router. Wi-Fi sensing also works on selected older Wi-Fi hardware.
- Current implementations are primarily residential. Office occupancy tracking using Wi-Fi sensing is not yet standard practice.
- Accuracy varies with AP placement, building layout, construction materials, device availability, and signal quality.
- It is not "essentially free." Deployments may require compatible gateways, specific firmware, software subscriptions, or cloud processing.
- Workplace deployment raises additional considerations: privacy policies, employee notice requirements, consent frameworks, data retention rules, and jurisdictional legal requirements.
Hidden Costs of a Wi-Fi 7 Deployment
- Access points: $199 per AP (U7 Pro Wall) × the number of APs your floor plan requires
- Switching: Wi-Fi 7 APs with 2.5GbE uplinks need multigigabit switches. A UniFi Pro Max 16 PoE currently costs $399; the 24-port Pro Max PoE is $799.
- Cabling: Cat6a or better is recommended for runs exceeding 2.5GbE. Re-cabling an office adds $100–$300+ per drop depending on location.
- Client devices: Wi-Fi 7 benefits (especially MLO and 6 GHz) require Wi-Fi 7 client devices. Most laptops shipped before 2024 do not support Wi-Fi 7.
- 6 GHz range: The 6 GHz band offers more bandwidth but shorter range and worse wall penetration than 5 GHz. Dense office layouts may need more APs.
- Regulatory availability: 6 GHz channel availability varies by country. Verify local regulations before planning a 6 GHz deployment.

Who Should Wait
If your office runs Wi-Fi 6 or 6E equipment that is performing adequately, a Wi-Fi 7 upgrade is not urgent. The primary benefits—MLO, wider 6 GHz channels—require matching client devices to realize. Plan Wi-Fi 7 for your next network refresh, not as an emergency replacement.
